Life can meander like a mountain stream or rage like a turbulent river. At some point, they will both settle into a calm, shallow pool.

Have you ever seen the movie “Groundhog Day”? If not, Tiny Words. Big Life. recommends it, if for no other reason than to deeply understand today’s post. (You’ll also see a funny, thought-provoking flick – probably unlike anything else you’ve seen.)

The main character in the movie is played by Bill Murray. He’s a grumpy, arrogant, and egotistical weatherman that’s been assigned to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities with Punxsutawney Phil, the Groundhog.

After giving his report to his TV audience, he wakes up the next morning to find that it’s Groundhog Day all over again. The scene repeats itself as he finds that each day he wakes up at 6:00 AM, it’s Groundhog Day again. He finally comes to the realization that the rest of his life will be reliving that day for eternity.

It’s an interesting movie plot but not something we’d want in real life. Life was meant to be unpredictable – not the same ole thing day after day. (Again, watch the movie.)

In our daily lives, we all experience life’s twists and turns. Sometimes, we’re sailing along, drifting down a peaceful stream, dangling our feet in the water while enjoying absolutely perfect weather and then – a storm kicks up and we’re hangin’ on for dear life.

The Tiny Words. Big Life. question of the day is not “Do you like the way that life ebbs and flows?” but rather “How do you handle the unpredictability of life?

If you’re trying to do it on your own, the ride will be very bumpy and the destination will be a place where you don’t want to spend eternity – much worse than Groundhog Day.

In today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. Bible verse, the Apostle John is writing to fellow Christians about how to live their life. According to John, when we sin, Jesus Christ is our advocate to God, an atoning sacrifice. He urges us (and them) to live our lives according to the teachings that we know – the things that we have heard and seen – as found in the Holy Bible.

The Tiny Words. Big Life. takeaway is to enjoy life’s ups and downs – knowing that Jesus is right there with you, no matter what comes your way.

In the end, when the waters in the rivers and streams stop flowing, the destination will be a place where you’ll want to spend eternity… and it’ll be nothing like Groundhog Day.

1 John 2:17

The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
