Define what is “fair” and you can easily find someone with an “unfair” definition.

If you grew up with brothers and sisters like I did, you probably complained to your parents about their application of fairness in a situation where you felt slighted.

You might have said something like, “That’s not fair. He got more cookies than me.” Or, “That’s not fair. She didn’t have to sweep the carport like I did.”

For the record, my parents were totally fair… My definition of being treated fairly? Not so much. Words like “self-serving”, “unjust”, and “short-sighted” were probably appropriate. But that was just me…

Before I continue with today’s post, I think it’s fair to say that discussing fairness is a prickly subject.

Why?

Because most people have a different definition of what it is.

I guess that’s fair but let’s get one thing straight…

Life isn’t fair. It never has been and never will be. The sooner we realize that, the sooner we can focus on doing the best we can with what we’ve got.

In today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. Bible verse, King Solomon is speaking about God’s establishment of rulers and their sphere of authority. If they take care of those who cannot take care of themselves, their throne will protected.

Sounds fair to me.

So what should we, as Christians, do with this concept of fairness?

The Tiny Words. Big Life. takeaway is this: Pray to see all people through the eyes of Jesus. That’s the only way we’ll ever be able to understand fairness. If we only see fairness through our own eyes, our attitudes and prejudices will cloud our interpretation.

One very important final note about fairness… When you reach the Pearly Gates of Heaven, an argument that God wasn’t fair in His application of grace will get you nowhere. We are totally responsible for the choices we make and the life that we live.

Hey, I don’t want anybody to sue me over advice they disagree with. That’s only fair, right?

Proverbs 29:14

If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will be established forever.
