Let those who clamor for recognition consume themselves while you steadily row your boat past the finish line.

1 Samuel 2:1-4

Do you know the difference between a “glory hound” and a “horn tooter”?

I’m not sure that I do either, but I’m pretty confident today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. quote is talking about one of them… Or maybe both?

If you think about it, most of us, if not all of us, have been guilty of “tootin’ our own horn” or maybe lookin’ for a little glory in whatever marvelous thing we did.

And this Blogmeister is not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing but it sure can get annoying to the person who has to put up with all that “tootin'”.

Does that sound weird or even slightly offensive?

Sorry… 🙁

Today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. Bible verse is not about a horn tooter or a glory hound.

Actually, it’s about the exact opposite of that.

It’s about a woman (Hannah) who was barren and prayed to God for the blessing of a child. She so wanted a child that she promised God that if He delivered a child to her, that she would give the child to God.

God, being the faithful God He is, gave Hannah what she desired… a baby boy who she named Samuel, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

In 1 Samuel 2, Hannah is praying a prayer of praise and thanksgiving. Rather than “tootin’ her own horn” or taking all the glory herself, she “tooted the horn” of God and gave Him all the glory!

Besides that, Hannah kept her promise to God (which is always a good thing). She gave Samuel to God for Him to use as He saw fit.

The Tiny Words. Big Life. takeaway is this: Pray for favor from our creator, not the favor of His creation. Pray to gather wisdom from your accomplishments – not admiration of other people. Pray that God will use your accomplishments for His glory and His kingdom. Then, rest on His promises that when you make that trip to the Pearly Gates, you’ll hear the sound of trumpets tooting and Jesus saying:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

So, the next time you feel the urge to “toot”, remember that God’s blessings are the basis of all we have and all we can accomplish. Give Him the glory and He will give you the desires of your heart.

And don’t be tootin’… (especially with the windows rolled up!) 🙂

1 Samuel 2:1-4

Then Hannah prayed and said:

1 “My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. “There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. 3 “Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed. 4 “The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
