People you meet today might have hitchhiked yesterday or might go hungry tomorrow.

Proverbs 19:17

When I see a hitchhiker on the side of the road, I’m thinking one of two things: Serial killer or someone who’s broke.

Okay, maybe I’ve watched too many movies about somebody that picks up a stranger and ends up in a news story where the words “foul play” are mentioned…

The other thought – seeing the hitchhiker as someone who’s probably broke, is because I figure anybody that’s desperate enough (or dumb enough these days) to hitch a ride with strangers has got to be facing extreme financial hardship. Basically, they can’t afford a car, otherwise they wouldn’t be hitchhiking.

Of course, I could be wrong on both accounts but that’s not really the point of today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. quote.

Today, we’re talking about using our eyes to see with our heart; not with our mind.

Several years ago, Christian artist Brandon Heath recorded a song that’s always stuck with me… “Give Me Your Eyes” is not only a catchy tune sung by a talented artist, but the words are such a profound, yet simple, description of how God wants us to live, serve, and love. It’s really a prayer that asks God to change the way we look at people… to see them as God sees them. The following words are from the chorus.

Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see

If you listen to the song, or just think about the words, one obvious thing stands out… Even if we have the eyes, we still have to look.

In today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. Bible verse, King Solomon reminds us that God will bless those who help the poor. Scripture rarely gets any plainer than that.

The Tiny Words. Big Life. takeaway is this: Pray to see people as Jesus did. Pray to see the need rather than the reason for the need. Pray to show love rather than waiting for someone else to do it.

As for hitchhiking, I can’t recommend it, even if you’re broke… Now if you’re a serial killer, you probably should have taken your last victim’s vehicle. It’s dangerous out there…

Proverbs 19:17

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.
