People appreciate good deeds done for others but love good deeds done for them.

Proverbs 19:6

The point of today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. post is not to accuse ourselves of being selfish – although we are.

It’s a reminder.

Several years ago, my wife and I read Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages as a year long couple’s Bible study and as a means to enrich our marriage.

In his book, Dr. Chapman writes there are 5 ways that people express and receive love. They are Words of AffirmationActs of ServiceReceiving GiftsQuality Time, and Physical Touch.

While today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. post is not a commercial for his book, it’s a reminder that you can never go wrong by serving others.

In fact, when you do, you’ll accomplish at least 3 things: You’ll feel good about yourself, you’ll make the person being served very happy, and you’ll honor God.

That’s a combination that’s hard to beat.

Today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. Bible verse is an observation about human nature. Who doesn’t enjoy receiving gifts? And, of course, there’s nothing wrong with that.

But in addition to receiving, Jesus reminded us that we should focus instead on serving others.

Just before His crucifixion, as found in John 13:14-15, he washed the feet of His disciples and instructed them to go and serve others, as He had done for them.

14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

The Tiny Words. Big Life. takeaway is this: Pray to show your love and commitment to others by serving them. Pray for the release of greed and share your blessings with others. Pray to serve with a cheerful heart and for a closer union with those you love.

And while you’re pondering the meaning of these words, I might as well mention that my grass needs mowing and my house needs painting, if anybody’s interested.

Many curry favor with a ruler, and everyone is the friend of one who gives gifts.
