Regardless of the question, you never have to remember the truthful answer.

1 John 2:3-5

Have you ever felt like Adam or Eve when God came into the Garden of Eden and asked “Where are you?”

You know you’ve done something bad and you try to hide – like the thing you’ve done is going to magically go away. It’s like we become a six-year-old that’s been caught with a hand in the cookie jar.

“Did you eat that cookie?” Mom asks.

“No.”, you say as your mouth chews that last little taste of chocolate chip.

Busted.

According to the Holy Bible, there is no such thing as a “little white lie”. A lie is a lie – whether that’s lying about cookies or you’re Bill Clinton on television talking to the American people about… you know – that.

In today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. Bible verse, we hear from the Apostle John, “the one that Jesus loved”. John pulls no punches. He calls us “liars” if we say that we “know Jesus” but do not do what He commands. While this might sound a little harsh, it’s true – which is the point of this post after all. John speaks the truth.

While today’s Tiny Words. Big Life. quote is based on one of God’s commandments, it’s also a “Public Service Announcement”.

Save yourself some trouble. Tell the truth.

Let’s go back to the image of the cookie jar… So, you’re standing there, chewing, and your mother is staring at you, knowing good and well that you’re lying.

That’s when the lies start building on each other.

“I was eating my leftover spinach that I didn’t eat for lunch.” Or, “I was chewing that bubble gum that Papaw gave me.”

Enough already. Your mother can poke holes in your story as quickly as Perry Mason can make a murderer confess. (I realize that the “Perry Mason” reference will date me – but Google it.)

The Tiny Words. Big Life. takeaway is this: Pray for wisdom to place the truth above your own selfish desires. Live in truth by speaking the truth. When you do this, God will bless you with the trust of others and your own self-respect.

And the next time your hand gets caught in the cookie jar – do yourself a favor… ask for another cookie.

1 John 2:3-5

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him:
